How do you pronounce the Hawaiian Words?

Taken from http://www.visitmaui.com/agents/pronounce.html

Pronunciation Guide and Common Hawaiian Words

a sounds like [ah] as in above [ah buv]

e sounds like [eh] as in bet [beht]

i sounds like [ee] as in be [bee]

o sounds like [oh] as in obey [oh bei]

u sounds like [oo] as in rule [rool]

ai sounds like the “i” in ice

ae sounds like I or eye

ao sounds like “ow” in how, but without a nasal twang

au sounds like the “ou” in house or out.

ei sounds like “ei” in chow mein or in eight

eu has no equivalent English; “eu” sounds like “eh-oo,” run together, as in a single syllable

iu sounds like “ew” in few

oi sounds like the “oi” in voice

ou sounds like the “ow” in bowl

ui is an unusual sound for English-speakers, sort of like the “ooey” in gooey, but pronounced as a single syllable

`okina glottal stop. Pronounced as a brief pause where it occurs in the word.

kahako macron. Elongates the sound of the vowel to which it is attached.

Common Hawaiian Words

`aina (EYE-nah) land

akamai (ah-kah-MYE) wise, smart

ali`i (ah-LEE-ee) a Hawaiian chief or member of the chiefly class

aloha (ah-LOH-hah) hello, goodbye, welcome

hale (HAH-leh) house

`ike (EE-keh) small

lei (lay) traditional necklace of flowers, shells or feathers

makai (ma-KAI) toward the ocean

malihini (mah-lee-HEE-nee) newcomer, visitor, or guest

Maui (MOW-ee) the island of Maui

mauka (MOW-kah) toward the mountain

Molokai (MOH-lo-kai) the island of Molokai

mo`o (MOH-oh) lizard, gecko

mu`umu`u (MOO-oo-MOO-oo) Hawaiian free-flowing dress
nui (NOO-ee) big

`ohana (oh-HAH-nah) family

`ono (oh-noh) delicious, tastes good, the best

paniolo (pah-nee-OH-loh) cowboy

pau (pow) finish, end

poi (poy) pounded kalo (taro) root that forms a paste

pono (POH-no) goodness, excellence, correct, proper

pua (poo-ah) flower

pupu (poo-poo) hors d’oeuvre, appetizer, snack or finger food

wahine (wah-HEE-neh) female, girl, woman

wai (why) fresh water

wikiwiki (WEE-kee-WEE-kee) hurry up, very quick

In summary, you would pronounce the Hawaiian words as you do for Malay instead of English! Have fun!

Count down for our final update!!

Aloha All!

The clock's ticking down and we've got 4 more days to the Final Briefing on Saturday.. so don't forget your sunblock and come on over to FBC 2nd Worship Hall on 15th Nov 08 from 2.00 - 6.00pm... we'll pray together for all and for each other, collect the children's materials, briefed by each of the Team Leads on what's happening at their corner..deco instructions and timing and ... collect your VBS08 T-Shirt ... if Lisa can get it fresh from the printer..

As we run up to VBS with less than 2 weeks left... things looks not ready, still so much to do, still blur, cannot finish all the stuffs, work@work's getting busy, aarrgghh...... don't worry.. no need to hit the panic button.... just commit it to the Lord and He will provide..remember how Jacob learned the lesson to trust wholly and completely on God before he crossed the Jordan... and came across the river as Isreal.. as we struggle with our inadequacies, worry, issues and lack of time and focus.. let us commit it all to Him ... come this Sat and we will pray for each other as well as for the children who are coming especially the ones who are yet to know and receive Him.. that He will prepare their hearts as they attend that their hearts may be open to Him. Also for us to remember that when we serve Him... the evil one will sure be there to disrupt our plans and to create chaos..especially disharmony among team members and not allow the unchurched kids to come.. so please come and let us all commit to the Lord and place ourselves into His hand as we struggle to obey Him in all we do.

Grab your paddle and slide on over...
Mahalo,
Lee Henn

Anne Cretin's Training!!

HOT off the Press:

Update..update..the venue for Anne Cretin's training has been moved to FBC, PJ 9.00am to 12.30noon!!! Please take note!!

*****************************************************************************************************************

Dear All:

Thank you for signing up to join the Ann Cretin's training workshop "How Do We Teach" using the LifeWay curriculum on Saturday morning from 9 am to 12:30 noon at Canaanland's new HQ. Attached once again is the alternate map to the venue. I think the old Subang Airport road seems to be the easier route to take. Be on the look-out for PAWS as your landmark.

The training workshop has received an overwhelming response. I would therefore advise you all to please come early (perhaps arrive by 8:20 am) to register and collect your file folder for handouts, and more importantly, get good seats in the hall. Moreover, you might not be familiar with the roads to the conference venue. So please - plan to get there early! VBS committee members will be helping at the registration table.

However, if you "sesat jalan", please call either Edward (017-886-9701), Larry (012-6010359) or Emilia (012-2818533) of Canaanland for direction help.

Perhaps you can also liaise with each other and meet at FBC at 8am and then car-pool to the venue - just a suggestion!

Wishing you all a fruitful and blessed week,
Lani

Volunteers Recruitment

Aloha!
Imagine the warm sandy beach, salt-scented breeze, beautiful sunshine, blue skies and the heart-pounding thrill of the Pacific Surf. This year, we will be traveling to the Hawaiian Islands for VBS 2008, the Outrigger Island: Living God’s Unshakable Truth! During the VBS 2008, kids will know, speak and live God’s truth-aloha style. Based on Psalm 86:11, Outrigger Island will be a tropical paradise where kids will develop the stability they need to face a world of shifting sands and wavering opinions.

The Vacation Bible School is an evangelistic ministry designed to reach children of all ages, leading them to know and respond to Jesus Christ in a fun-filled, spiritual adventure that provides concentrated Bible study and encourages real-life application. VBS focused on:
- Encouraging continuous exposure to God’s Word for the our kids and their un-churched friends;
- Studying the Bible and encouraging real-life application;
- Encouraging our children and their parents to work together to reach out to the un-churched children among their friends and community;
- Creating an opportunity for touching the lives of their parents and family through their children’s participation in VBS; and
- Molding our children to be mission minded.

Recalling last year’s heartache of having to turn kids away due to the lack of space along with the reminiscence and encouragement of last year’s VBS song, “We walk by faith and not by sight”, the VBS 2008 Committee has decided to “walk by faith” in organizing 2 sessions, one in the morning and another in the afternoon, for this year’s VBS. This year, we will do something a little different by holding the Family Concert on Saturday afternoon and host the VBS kids in our Sunday School program the following day. We are expecting a crowd of around 400 children for the both sessions. We are seeking for at least 60 teaching team members and 100 volunteers. The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer is a willing heart to serve and an open heart for God to lead and mold. No other experience required! We will learn to lean on God to equip and provide for us! For more information, head to the FBC VBS blog at http://fbcvbs08.blogspot.com/.

Date: Monday to Friday, 24th – 28th November 2008
Saturday, 29th Nov afternoon – Family Concert
Sunday, 30th Nov morning – Sunday School Host

Surf’s up, so grab your surfboard and head for the waves! Sign up by 15th June 2008.

Mahalo!
VBS 2008 Committee
